Great post! I wholeheartedly agree, and generally create my own music idols, cell phones/social media/websites/other technology so that the reader won't roll his eyes ten years from now. :)

And it's a tricky thing keeping up with technology. I tend to assume that whatever is the most cutting edge now - everyone has it in my story - because in a few years it probably won't be cutting edge, but common place.
